Joel Montijo Obituary, June 1, 2025 : The Amarillo community is heartbroken over the sudden and tragic passing of Joel Montijo, a cherished friend, brother, and well-known sales professional at Mazda Amarillo. At just 22 years old, Joel’s life was unexpectedly cut short following a devastating car accident at Playa Lake early Saturday morning.
According to the Amarillo Police Department (APD), officers were called to the area of South Soncy Road and SW 77th Avenue after reports of a vehicle crashing into Playa Lake. A woman, who was wet and visibly distressed, told authorities she had been in the car with her boyfriend when it entered the lake. While she managed to escape, she was unsure of his whereabouts.
The APD Dive Team and drone unit swiftly responded, locating the submerged vehicle. Sadly, after an extensive search, divers recovered the body of Joel Montijo from the lake. An autopsy has been ordered, and the family has been notified.
